Frankincense is not a flower or a leaf but a resin — the fragrant “tears” that seep from the bark of Boswellia trees when it is carefully scored, then harden in the desert air. The finest of all is Boswellia sacra, the sacred frankincense of southern Arabia, tapped from gnarled trees that grow where almost nothing else will. Steam-distilled, the resin gives a clear, warm oil of remarkable depth — the same material that was once traded ounce for ounce against gold.

Incense of the Ancient World

For at least five thousand years, frankincense has been among the most treasured substances on Earth. It built the Incense Route, the great desert trade road that carried Arabian resin to Egypt, Jerusalem, Greece, and Rome.
