True palo santo is the heartwood of Bursera graveolens, a tree native to the dry tropical forests of South America's Pacific coast. Our oil is distilled exclusively from naturally fallen wood, sourced from ethical Ecuadorian suppliers — never from felled living trees. Tradition holds that the wood must lie on the forest floor for years to develop its full aromatic character. We honor that tradition, and the centuries of Indigenous Quechua, Shuar, and Achuar relationship with this sacred tree.

The Science Behind the Scent

Palo santo is unusually rich in limonene — typically 60-80% of the essential oil composition. Peer-reviewed research has documented limonene's measurable effects on mood, including reductions in anxious feelings and support for emotional balance through A2A adenosine receptor pathways. The high limonene content is also what gives palo santo its characteristic bright citrus shimmer over the warm wood base — the molecular reason this is one of the few woods on Earth that smells simultaneously grounding and uplifting.
