The Aztecs called it cempōhualxōchitl — the “twenty-flower” — and grew it for ceremony, adornment, and medicine for centuries before the Spanish arrived. Today it is the cempasúchil, the radiant heart of Día de los Muertos: its blazing color and strong scent are believed to guide the spirits of the dead home to the ofrenda, where petals are laid in bright paths from doorway to altar. Marigold’s warm, distinctive aroma comes from an unusual family of molecules — the tagetones, the aromatic ketones that give the genus Tagetes its name — alongside the familiar, well-studied compounds linalool, limonene, and the ocimenes. Limonene has been studied for calming, relaxation-supporting effects via adenosine A2A receptor pathways, and linalool is among the most researched of all aromatic molecules associated with a sense of ease.
